Quote from Neil Ross about Voltron
Neil Ross did a chat a few months back and he mentioned what is was like working on Voltron back in the 80s. Here's what he had to say:
Question: When you worked on voltron, did you have any problems trying to match the characters lip-movements while still sticking to the script?
Neil Ross: stand by for long answer.
Neil Ross: Here’s how we did Voltron. The producti8on people would time the lip movements and we would have that much time to do the line. We were allowed to be a tenth of a second long or short - no more. Every line had a time beside it in seconds. It must be easier to express an idea in Japanese. We were always having lines that were too long and trying to figure out some way to cut them down to fir and still make sense. Then there are some cultural concepts that just donn’t translate at all. So we’d just make up some philosophical gibberish to fill in.
Thought that was really interesting! Explains some of the weird lines we'd get.
